SMS marketing. How to create an effective text message

SMS texting is one of the most sought-after types of customer communications, and interest in it has only grown in recent years. Text messaging is a universal solution. It is suitable for both online businesses and those with an offline presence only.
According to the 99firms agency, the Open rate of SMS reaches up to 98%, while for email newsletters this figure is only 20% on average. The average click-through rate for SMS marketing is 19.3%. In comparison, only 4.2% of all emails result in clicks on the links contained within them. Today on the Selpway blog, we talk about how to properly compose an SMS for a newsletter.

Rules of writing and design of text for SMS-newsletters
Simple and understandable text is the main rule of a good mailing. No one wants to solve puzzles and wonder what you meant. Keep the text concise and accessible. But don't give up creativity in SMS if you can combine it with simplicity.
  1. Always show the benefit. The most important thing that should be in the advertising message is the benefit for the customer. For example, the text could look like this: ‘Get a 30% discount on the entire summer collection’.
  2. Leave contacts. If you offer the addressee to get acquainted with the assortment, place an order online or by phone, then be sure to indicate how it can be done: website address, phone number or contact in messengers. The customer should know how to take advantage of your favourable offer without any extra effort. Do not force a person to search for your contacts.
  3. Minimise the use of capital letters to emphasise words. There is no way to change the font or colour of the text in SMS. If you want to draw the customer's attention to something specific, you can capitalise one or two words. You should not write the entire text of the message using capslock.
  4. Avoid obscure words and abbreviations. You should not use slang, abbreviations and acronyms that are known only to you. The text of the message should be clear and easy to read.
  5. Make a call to action. Use encouraging words such as ‘get’, ‘order’, ‘take’, etc.
  6. Make the customer feel special. People love personalised offers, promo codes and the like. So inform them about exclusive promotions. This way you can incentivise the customer to keep on staying with you so that they don't miss out on lucrative offers.
  7. Make your messages short and specific. Define a limit for yourself: for example, an SMS should contain no more than 100 characters. Work on the message until it meets the standards. Learn to concisely convey as much useful information as possible. Leave a link or contact where the person can find out the details.
  8. Test, proofread, and proofread your message. Especially if you are a beginner. Take your time, reread the text several times to rule out any mistakes. Send a test message to yourself or friends. When you are sure that there are no errors in the message and it is displayed correctly, only then start mass mailing.
Remember, you can't send messages frequently - it's a direct route to the blacklist. Use this method of communicating with customers only to deliver useful and urgent information. SMS marketing statistics indicate that special offers such as free delivery or limited time sales are the most popular type of messages. These are followed by new product announcements and exclusive offers.

Despite new channels of promotion and communication short text message mailings continue to work. SMS marketing complements advertising campaigns and improves communication with customers.
